Having successfully provided the ironmongery for Cummins Engines Systems in Darlington, we were invited by UK architect James Cubitt & Partners to become involved with Cummins new $70m filtration manufacturing facility in Izmir, Turkey.
This was a very time sensitive project and from first engagement in June 2011 we completed supply in November of that same year.
With time being of the essence we collected floor plans and door schedules from Cubitts London office and set to work creating our usual high quality, UK Manufactured specification. Over the coming days and weeks and numerous international conference calls it became apparent that a very robust American specification was preferred by both the client and the US consultant Trusys. We therefore amended our schedules accordingly whilst simultaneously visiting our American product distributors in the South of England to update our product knowledge and ensure compatibility.
This produced a working document that enabled Scott to travel to Istanbul to meet with the local architect, TEM Engineering & Consulting to run through and agree our proposals. As it turned out this was a very straight forward process with most of the hard work having already been done back in the UK.
With the full American specification coming in over budget we were asked to value engineer if possible. We were able to achieve this to everyone’s satisfaction by blending both American and UK products into one harmonised specification, reducing the cost but keeping the quality high and even improving the aesthetic. This did produce some technical challenges, most notably with the master keyed system where we provided both American style mortise and European profile cylinders which we were able to manufacture using purpose made cams.
Working with the local contractor MSB Construction we were also able to provide one weeks assistance on site to help with the installation of some of the more technically challenging products.
Projects in our industry often take years from initial architect contact to supply. Receiving the order in mid-September of 2011 and having all ironmongery manufactured and air-freighted from the US then couriered by road to Turkey by mid-November was certainly challenging but demonstrated our versatility to adapt to every situation providing an excellent service with an end product to match.
We worked with TEM again in 2017 on another huge project in Turkey with both Stephen and Scott travelling to Istanbul on another quick turnaround project.
Mr. Zihni Tekin, the project architect on both contacted us this year in April this year with the following lovely comments:
